On Christmas Eve 2019, Erminia, received the worst news a parent could hear. Her 8 year-old son, Zane, was diagnosed with a rare and terminal paediatric brain tumour, DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma). Sadly, their family didn’t have much time.
“DIPG children never have much time. No treatment options were available in Australia except palliative radiation,” Erminia said. Desperately racing against the clock, Min became a midnight research warrior, searching for treatment options or clinical trials overseas. “Rare Cancers Australia helped me with that immensely and saved me a lot of time. They had that conversation with us that Zane’s doctors would not. A conversation about options and alternatives. They provided us with a lifeline.”
RCA put Min in touch with a DIPG advocate in New York. “She helped me navigate treatment options and clinical trials available in the US, and who the experts in the field were. It saved me so much time on research and provided me with contacts of doctors willing to discuss a plan for Zane. RCA also helped with our crowdfunding, as all this would have to be self-funded. None of this was going to cure him; we just wanted the possibility of more time with our little boy.”
Min and Zane’s younger brother, Saxon, did their first Kosi Challenge with close friends last year; raising one of the highest amounts of all community fundraisers.
“March is Zane’s birthday month and we wanted to do something amazing in memory of him, while also giving back to RCA. This year Team Zane has grown, and we are so excited to do it again. Climbing Mt K is a feat in itself. But it’s nothing compared to what rare cancer sufferers and families face. The energy on the climb is uplifting and fun. It is comforting being around other people that have shared similar experiences with a rare cancer, and we love being able to help support future families on this tough road that they will sadly have to travel.”

Team Zane conquered Kosi and raised over $12,000. After a few “are we there yet” and “how much further” questions, the kids kicked into gear and embraced the day. Donations kept coming as Team Zane kept climbing, even generous strangers donating along the way. We won the photo competition - second year in a row! How will we top it next year? One thing is for sure, Team Zane will be be back. Thank you to our supporters and Min and Saxon for allowing us to honour your beautiful boy. 💙⛰💙

Who’s pumped for 2022 Kosi Challenge? Less than 2 weeks to go - plenty of time for the trail to dry out and for Team Zane to move up from 3rd place in the Kosi Cup fundraising challenge. Last year this small group of legends took home the cup, so I reckon this years crew can exceed our goal of $9000 and bring home some silverware. All money raised helps people with rare cancers and their families. Such an important cause, so close to our hearts. Cmon Team Zane and supporters, dig deep $ 💙

Just 6 weeks out from our Kosi Challenge and Team Zane’s fundraising is well underway. Zoe Bova leading the way with some creative fundraising strategies including cold calling family members and doing a presentation to her whole school. What a great way to honour her good friend Zane. Look forward to sharing other team members fundraising efforts as they ramp up. Go Team Zane $ 💙💙💙

In 2021 Team Zane set out on our first Kosi Challenge. We wanted to remember & honour Zane, celebrate his birthday month & raise a few $ for RCA. Oh yeah and reach the top of Australia! Despite some inclement weather on the day we reached all our goals and smashed our fundraising target. Our small Team is growing for 2022, and we look forward to welcoming new team members and raising much needed funds for families. The fun starts now so register with Team Zane.
