This FAQ document aims to answer every possible question you could have about Ride4Rare 2020. If we’ve missed something, please get in touch with your question.


When is the event?

Thursday 19th March – Friday 20th March 2020

What time does it start?

The Ride4Rare is a two- day riding event.

Start times are:

Day 1

Canberra: Thursday 8.00am for a 9.00am start.

The lawn in front of Parliament House. Parade Ground

Day 2

Cooma: Friday morning 8.30am for a 9.00am start

Cooma Visitors Centre, Centennial Park, Sharp St, Cooma

How many people will participate in this year’s event?

Participation will be limited to 50 cyclists.

How long does the ride take?
Day 1

Approximately 115 km's - 6 hours on the road including rest stops

First stop: Collinton Rest Area MONARO HIGHWAY, BREDBO. ETA approx. 11.00am – 11.30am

Second stop: Cooma approx. 3.00pm. Overnight stop.

Day 2:

Approximately 97 km's - 6 hours including rest stops

First Stop: Berridale – approx. 10.30 – 11.00am.

Second Stop: Banjo Patterson Park, Jindabyne 1.00 – 1.30pm (Lunch)

Finish Line: Thredbo Village 4.00 – 5.30pm


How do I register? When do registrations close?

Register here. Online registrations close at 12 pm on Friday 6th March 2020. Depending on numbers, event registrations may close earlier.

What are the costs? (Event registration and National Park entry)

Registration: $550.00 inc GST

Registration includes Ride4Rare participation, cycling jersey, RARE cap, overnight accommodation in Cooma and registration to Hike4Rare (if you wish to continue and participate in the 3rd day of Kosi Challenge)
Participants are encouraged to also fundraise.

Children under 18 not permitted

There are no entry costs for cyclists for the National Park. If you drive your car into the National Park you will be required to purchase a Parking Pass.

Cost is $17.00 per vehicle per day. You can purchase your pass at the Information Centre in Thredbo Village rather than queuing at the Entry Gate.

Can I register on the day itself?

No, you must pre-register online here. Online registrations close at 12pm on Friday 6th March 2020. Depending on numbers, event registrations may close earlier.

What does my registration fee cover?

Registration includes Ride4Rare participation, cycling jersey, RARE cap, overnight accommodation in Cooma and registration to Hike4Rare (if you wish to continue and participate in the 3rd Day of Kosi Challenge)

What is the discount code I see when I register for the event online? Am I eligible?

From time to time, RCA may have a promotion for an event which may include a discount. If this is so, information on how to access the code and eligibility will be made available on our website. Currently, there is no promotion or discount available.


Where does my fundraising money go?

Funds raised go to Rare Cancers Australia Ltd (RCA), a charity whose purpose is to improve awareness, support and treatment of Australians with rare and less common (RLC) cancers.

Every year there are over 52,000 diagnoses of RLC Cancers and around 25,000 deaths. All funds raised in the 2020 Ride4Rare will go to supporting our patient care team and their work with our rare cancer patients.

How do I set up a fundraising page?

You will set up a fundraising page as part of your event registration. It is a simple process and can be done online very quickly. You can then share the link with everyone you know online. If you plan to be part of a team, you can join or create a team as part of your event registration. If you forgot to do this, you can always create or join a team via your fundraiser dashboard.

How much am I expected to raise?

You can set you own fundraising target. 

Can I participate in Ride4Rare without actively fundraising?

Yes you can. However we are encouraging all our riders to actively fundraiser.

Is there a prize for the biggest fundraiser?

We’d welcome the provision of a prize to incentivize our participants. If you would like to donate a prize please contact nikki@rarecancers.org.au


Is there a social gathering after the first day of the event?

There will be an informal gathering from 6pm for the Ride4rare Peloton, family and friends at the Cooma Hotel.

The Cooma Hotel is a significant historical building built in 1862. It is situated on the corner of Massie and Vale Streets, Cooma NSW. The 150-year-old building has undergone a major renovation, keeping its historic beauty and restoring its original stonework and chimneys. At the same time internally, it has been brought into the 21st Century with ample space for everyone to relax and feel comfortable.

The bistro caters for over 70 people and has a fantastic menu. They always have 7 great specials all under $20.00. Drinks and dinner available (Note: cash or credit card payment to the hotel on the night).

Is there a social/networking gathering taking place after the event?

There will be an informal gathering from 6pm on Friday 20th March 2020 for the Ride4Rare Peloton, family and friends. We will advise the confirmed venue at Thredbo Alpine Resort closer to the event depending on numbers.

On The Day

Where is the meeting place for the start of the ride?

The Lawn in front of Parliament House

What should I wear/bring along

All riders need to manage their own nutrition.

All riders need to prepare for and be conscious of all-weather conditions as this is an alpine area.

Come prepared, get your bike serviced before the event, put on new tires, check your brakes, cables, chain, lube etc. Please do not arrive to the start with a bike that needs a full service.

Do I have to be really fit?

All riders are expected to sustain between 25kmh and 28kmh

Do we BYO lunch? Can we buy it?

We will provide food at this stop – there is no need to provide your own lunch.

Will there be water and toilet stops?

Water/Gatorade will be available at the designated stopping points so that participants can refill their drink bottles. There are toilets at each of the designated stops.

Can I buy a picture of myself or my team at the finish line?

RCA Staff will be present at the finish line if you would like assistance in taking a photo.

Do you provide sunscreen?

We will provide sunscreen. You need to provide your own medications and weather gear.

What if I am late for the start? Is there a cut off?

Please refer to the registration and start times above. Ensure that you allow 60 minutes prior to your start time on Day 1. 30 minutes prior to the start time on Day 2.

Is the start line marked with branded flags?

The meeting point for all participants will be signed appropriately and clearly branded with Rare Cancers Australia banners.

What are my accommodation options?

Accommodation in Cooma is included in your registration fee. We will advise which hotel closer to the event. For family and friends who may be meeting you in Cooma on the Thursday evening, there are various levels of accommodation in Cooma.

Participants are advised to organise their own accommodation in Canberra.

Accommodation in Canberra can be difficult to obtain if it is a Parliamentary Sitting Week so participants are advised to secure their accommodation early.

Due to location and facilities, RCA staff and volunteers will be staying at The Brassy Hotel https://brasseyhotel.com.au/.

Any riders participating in Ride4Rare have been offered a 15% discount off Best Available Rate at a range of DOMA Hotels in Canberra including Brassey Hotel. For a list of Hotels in Canberra and the applicable Discount Code please contact zac@rarecancers.org.au.

Issues on the day

What happens if it’s raining?

The event will go ahead in light rain. If the conditions are deemed unsafe, the ride director will communicate with riders on a case by case basis.

What is the weather forecast for the ride?

At the time of publication, a weather forecast was not available. Please visit http://www.weatherzone.com.au/act/act/canberra closer to the event.

What if I get injured or sick?

Medical support will assess and make decisions based on your condition. There will be a fully trained medic at our Ride4Rare event. If you injure yourself or someone in our group is injured, please notify an event organizer to arrange assistance.

There is first aid care available in Thredbo and a medical service is located in Jindabyne. There is a hospital in Cooma (02) 6457 6254 or for emergencies dial 000.


What if I must cancel? Do I get a refund?

Cancellations occurring less than seven (7) days prior to an event will incur a 10 per cent administration fee. Cancellations made less than 72 hours prior to an event will forfeit full payment. Substitutes can be made at any time. See our full refund terms and conditions.

Is the event covered by insurance?

Yes, RCA has public liability insurance for this event.
