About Us

What is the Kosi Challenge

The Kosi Challenge is Rare Cancers Australia’s (RCA) major fundraising event - in 2023 we are celebrating its 11th anniversary.

It sees people unite from across Australia, including patients and families, to climb to our country's highest point, the summit of Mount Kosciuszko to raise much needed funds and awareness for Australians affected by rare, less common and complex cancers.

No Australian should have to go through their cancer journey alone. That is why we walk the journey with those impacted.

There are two ways to participate in the Kosi Challenge

All participants will receive a RARE branded gift. Those involved in-person will get a cap or drink bottle on the event day, and virtual Challengers will receive a cap in the mail.

All funds raised from the Kosi Challenge will go towards the important work our Patient Support Team carry out. From helping patients to access specialists and treatments, through to delivering support groups, connecting people with services and providing financial assistance particularly in times of crisis, our Patient Support team are at the heart of what we do.

What is a rare cancer?

In Australia, a rare cancer is defined as an incidence of less than six per 100,000 of the population, and a less common cancer is an incidence between six and twelve inclusive per 100,000 of the population.

In 2017, an estimated 52,000 people were diagnosed with rare and less common cancers in Australia, and 25,000 lost their lives - according to Cancer in Australia 2017 estimates.

While we have seen increases in incidence for common cancers, we have also seen dramatic reductions in mortality due to early diagnosis and improved treatments. But this has not been the case for rare and less common cancers, where the diagnosis remains slow, and treatment availability is limited.
