How It All Began

The Mount Kosciuszko Challenge began in 2013 with Rare Cancers Australia’s co-founders Richard and Kate Vines embarking on the Parliament to Peak walk from Canberra to Mount Kosciuszko in an effort to raise awareness for rare and less common cancers.

Leaving from Canberra on Rare Diseases Day, February 28, it took Richard and Kate 11 days and 220kms to finally reach Australia’s highest summit. Parliament to Peak was indeed an amazing journey, an emotional and physically challenging adventure along the Monaro Highway and the scenic Alpine Way.

On March 10, Richard and Kate reached Thredbo National Park and were joined by 40 supporters of the organisation. This small but highly passionate and motivated group became the first participants of the inaugural Mount Kosciuszko Challenge.

The Challenge grew to 325 participants in 2017 with fundraising efforts totalling to over $140,000.00. Now in its sixth year, the event will attract large number of avid supporters and some new faces. 2018 is set to be big! So join us and together we can move and conquer mountains!

Where the Money Goes

Our mission is to improve awareness, support and treatment of Australians with rare and less common cancers. Currently, there is little support for people with a rare cancer. The mortality rate is extremely high, and coupled with the exorbitant financial burden of treatment, most patients struggle to access information and care.

Since its launch in 2013, the event has raised much needed awareness and funds for our cause. Proceeds from the event have helped fund:

  • Patient Access to Treatment
  • Research Initiatives
  • Education and Community Awareness Programs
  • Advocacy and Policy Engagement

RCA believes we have a duty to provide an equal level of care to rare cancer patients as well as those with more common cancers. At the very least, we want to give patients and their loved ones just a little more time. We provide information and support to those diagnosed with rare or less common cancers, fundraise for treatment and essential research as well as foster a patient community. We also campaign for affordable and accessible life-saving drugs that will make the current treatment system equitable.

100 per cent of the funds raised through The Kosciuszko Challenge go towards improving the lives and outcomes for Aussies living with a rare or less common cancer.

RCA is a Federal Government-classified Health Promotion Charity. All donations over AU $2 are fully tax deductible.

Rare Cancers Australia

Richard and Kate Vines co-founded Rare Cancers Australia (RCA) in June 2012 and in the ensuing years have established the organisation as a key participant in the broader cancer community.

During this time RCA has published research on the state of rare and less common cancers through the ‘Just a Little More Time’ baseline and update reports, actively advocated for policy reform around research and treatment, launched the first of its kind, 'Rare Solutions: A Time to Act'  roadmap for reform, and provided substantial support to Australian living with rare and less common cancers today.

Richard and Kate continue to work with government, clinicians and industry to make certain that these cancers, of which there are over 200, will never be forgotten or ignored again.
